Javier Hernandez to establish himself at Old Trafford next season

Javier Hernandez inspiring Manchester United’s comeback against Aston Villa last season

With big changes happening at Old Trafford this season we could see Javier Hernandez emerge as a talisman for the reds.

Manchester United poacher Javier Hernandez found himself short of starting opportunities in the 2012/2013 season, with the arrival of Robin Van Persie making him the third choice striker and at times fourth choice.

In the 2012/2013 season Chicharito scored 10 goals in 22 Premier League outings – 10 of which were substitute appearances. He made fewer appearances than Robin Van Persie, Wayne Rooney and Danny Welbeck yet he was still Uniteds second top goal scorer in the league behind Van Persie.

We saw the Mexican rescue United on a number of occasions last season – look no further than Aston Villa and Chelsea away. That’s at least five points that he stole – without me even having to think about it – I’m sure there was many more.

It’s no secret the talent that Hernandez possesses, he burst straight into the first team when he was signed in 2010. With speculation surrounding Rooney as well as a niggling injury putting him out of the team, Hernandez stole the show and became an instant fans favourite.

Javier Hernandez’s superb form for Mexico is making it very difficult for David Moyes to leave him out of the starting 11 next season. If Wayne Rooney is to leave, Hernandez will be poised to snap up the opportunity once again.

Mexico coach Jose Manuel De la Torre said,“He’s highly competitive, and has a huge dynamic and sense of timing in order to score … and that is what has taken him to be at these very high levels with Manchester United. Now he’s simply responding with these goals for the national team.”

His team mates are not shy in praising the opportunistic, Antonio Valencia told United’s website “You can’t say any more about Javier! He’s been here now for three seasons and if you were to try and work out how many times he’s made the difference, it’s just incredible”.

Breakthrough

This could very well be the season that Hernandez steals the show. If the Mexican can continue his international form into the 2013/2014 season with United it would be almost impossible to put him on the bench.

Chicharito is completely different to any other forward United have – he is a poacher and a goal machine. His movement and the timing of his runs are unique, he is almost impossible to mark because you simply can’t keep track of what movement he will make. His finishing is terrific, he know exactly where the goal is at all times and knows how to find it, he has one instinct and that is to find the back of the net. For a small player he is outstanding in the air, he is just 5ft 9 but regularly scores with his head as the timing of his jump and size of his leap are staggering.

I believe one of the best attributes that Hernandez holds is his attitude. He is often compared to United legend Ole Gunnar Solskjaer because he doesn’t sulk if he is on the bench, he uses the time he has to stamp his mark on the game. He has never spat his dummy out and declared that he wants to leave for more football, he loves the club he is playing at and just simply wants to play football.

I really feel that this will be his ‘big season’, he may have perhaps been type cast under Ferguson as the former United boss admitted there were similarities between him and Solskjaer. Moyes will come in with a fresh way of thinking and will judge the players how he sees them at the time and with the way Hernandez is performing for Mexico, I can see him being a huge player next season.

Sir Alex Fergusons Best 11

Image

With the retirement of Sir Alex Ferguson being announced at the end of the 2012/2013 season many people are asking what his greatest ever team would be. Here is mine…

GK: Peter Schmeichel

An absolute rock at the back, the ‘Great Dane’ won almost everything there is to win with Manchester United. Winning five FA Premier League titles, three FA Cups, one League Cup, and the UEFA Champions League.

His shot stopping ability was out of this world, he deified physics at times with the agility he possessed for such a big man. He would come out and claim everything in the air and command the defense like no other with his loud and powerful voice.

It was really hard to leave Van Der Sar out of this team but Schmeichel just scraped it.

The  Danish giant was famously a bargain at United when he was signed form Brondby for £505,000 in 1991. Schmeichel went on to to play 393 games for United, keeping 87 clean sheets and scoring 1 goal – coming against Rotor Volgograd in the Champions League. He is regarded as one of Sir Alex Fergusons best ever buys.

In his time with United, Peter Schmeichel won 5 Premier League titles, 3 FA Cups, 1 League Cup, 4 Charity Shields, 1 UEFA Champions League and 1 Uefa Super Cup.

RB: Gary Neville

This one was easy really. He dominated the right-back position for well over a decade at United between the years of 1992-2011.

Gary Neville was a natural leader and his love for the club he played for all of his career was reflected in the way he played the game. He always gave 100% and left nothing out on the pitch.

A graduate of the famous ‘class of 92’ Gary Neville was in no way the most naturally gifted footballer but his work rate, enthusiasm and winning mentality made him arguably the best right-back to have ever played in the Premier League.

His hunger to get forward down the flank and ability to whip the ball into the penalty area provided United with a real asset in attack as well as him being a rock at the back.

Neville played 602 games for United, scoring 7 goals and winning 8 Premier League titles, 3 FA Cups, 2 League Cups, 3 Community Shields, 2 UEFA Champions Leagues, 1 Intercontinental Cup and 1 FIFA Club World Cup.

He also made the PFA Team of the Year in 1997,1998,1999,2005 and 2007. He too made the Overall Team of the Decade from 1992- 2002.

CB: Jaap Stam

Although compared to the rest of this best 11, Stam didn’t stay at Old Trafford very long but he was very affective.

With the dynamic duo of Gary Pallister and Steve Bruce (it was very, very hard to leave them both out of this team) retired, Sir Alex needed to bring in someone to fill the massive hole at the back. If you have a massive hole to fill, fill it with a massive players.

Jaap Stam was purchased from PSV Eidnhoven in the summer of 1998 for a fee of £10.6million making him the most expensive ever Dutch player at the time and the worlds most expensive defender. It was money well spent as he strengthened and stabilized Uniteds defense, giving them a platform to win the treble in his first season.

Stam played 80 times for United in the three years he spent at the club, scoring one goal. During his time at Old Trafford he impressively won: 3 Premier League titles, 1 FA Cup, 1 UEFA Champions League and 1 Intercontinental Cup. He also picked up UEFA Club Best Defender of the Year in 1998-99 and again in 1999-00.

CB: Rio Ferdinand

Manchester United broke the bank back on 22nd July 2003 to lure in Rio Ferdinand from Leeds United. Including agents fees and other add ons, United splashed out around £34 million for the English centre-half, which made him the most expensive British footballer in history at the time as well as making him the worlds most expensive defender. It is safe to say that on reflection of his 11 years at Old Trafford, it was well worth the money.

With great agility, speed, a high level of skill combined with his aggression, strength, tackling and ability to read the game, make Rio Ferdinand the ultimate centre-back and a great leader.

Ferdinand has been paired with a number of different centre-backs in his 11 years at the club but on 25th January 2006, the arrival of Nemanja Vidić completed one of the best central defensive partnerships there has ever been. It was incredibly hard to leave Vidić out of this team because he is up there with the greatest but Ferdinand just edged it for me.

Ferdinand has been an absolute rock at the back and has been one of the most consistent players of the Ferguson era. Ferdinand can always be relied on and for that reason he has made my team.

During his time at Old Trafford he has made 671 appearances, scoring 12 goals. He won 6 Premier League titles, 2 League Cups, 4 Community Sheilds, 1 Champions League and 1 FIFA Club World Cup.

LB: Dennis Irwin

Dennis Irwin is another name that is mentioned when discussing the bargains of the Ferguson era and has been regarded by Sir Alex Ferguson as ‘Pound for pound my greatest signing’.

Purchased for £625,000 from neighbours Oldham Athletic Dennis Irwin is probably Fergie’s best value for money signing. Irwin was the ultimate full-back, he would run up and down the wing for 90 minutes straight, his ability to whip a ball in was second to none and he was incredibly reliable at the back.

Irwin was excellent from set pieces, he could strike free kicks as well as anyone and was United’s penalty taker during his time there. He scored 33 goals in 529 appearances for the reds with just 5 other United players to have played more games for the club.

Irwin’s honours are staggering, he is one of the most decorated players in the clubs history. He has won: 7 Premier League titles, 3 FA Cups, 1 League Cup, 4 Charity Shields, 1 UEFA Champions League, 1 Cup Winners Cup, 1 European Super Cup and 1 Intercontinental Cup.

RW: Cristiano Ronaldo

It was hard to leave David Beckham out of this side but this is the man that edged him out.

Christiano Ronaldo arrived at Manchester United for a fee of £12.24 million from Sporting Lisbon in 2003. He burst into the first team against Bolton, making his debut in a 3-0 win and instantly had fans talking. He provided United with a touch of flair down the wing and made an instant impression on the Old Trafford faithful.

From his first appearance Ronaldo continued to grow over the next couple of seasons and really established himself as a key player in the 2006-2007 season. He broke the 20 goal barrier for the first time and picked up consecutive Barclays Player of the Month Awards in  November and December as well as winning PFA Players’ Player of the Year and PFA Young Player of the Year. He also won PFA Fans’ Player of the Year and the FWA Footballer of the Year.

The 2007-2008 season saw Ronaldo hittting his peak. He scored 42 goals in all competitions as United won both the Premier League and the Champions League. At the end of the season Ronaldo became the first United player since George Best in 1968 to win the Ballon d’Or.

Ronaldo remained at Old Trafford another year before moving to Real Madrid for a world record fee of £80 million.

Cristiano Ronaldo is an absolute superstar and in my opinion is the best player in the world at the moment. He has everything; he can strike a ball as well as anyone, his ball control is sensational, his vision, pace, strength and instinct in-front of goal are all outstanding.

In his time at Old Trafford Ronaldo won: 3 Premier League titles, 1 FA Cup, 2 League Cups, 1 Community Shield, 1 UEFA Champions League and 1 FIFA Club World Cup.

CM: Roy Keane

Well known for his bad temper and the ferocious way he played the game, people often forget just how good of a footballer Roy Keane was.

When he was signed from Nottingham Forest for a then record fee of £3.75 million, he instantly burst into the starting line-up – due to a number of injuries affecting Bryan Robson – and became an Old Trafford favourite when he scored two goals on his home debut.

Keane is remembered by many as a holding midfielder who allowed Paul Scholes to play in a more attacking role but there was much more to Keane. In his earlier playing years at Old Trafford, Keane was a terrific box-to-box midfielder. The Irishman would be everywhere on the pitch, winning possession, running past defenders like they weren’t there, creating chances and scoring goals – Keane had everything.

In the season of 1997/1998 in his first season as captain Keane suffered a cruciate ligament injury which put him out for the whole season. Whe Keane returned from injury he was a little less mobile and adopted more of a defensive midfield role which freed up the emerging Paul Scholes to push forward.

Roy Keane was a natural leader and a footballing warrior. He had obvious issues with conduct but he always put everything he had into every game and left nothing out on the pitch.

Keane’s stand out performance for me was the second leg of the Champions League semi-final in 1999, at the San Siro against Juventus. After a 1-1 draw at Old Trafford, Juventus were in the driving seat in the second leg and then went 2-0 up at the San Siro. United looked on their way out but an inspired performance from Roy Keane drove United on to a 3-2 win, to put them through to the final of which they won dramatically against Bayern Munich. Keane scored the first goal in the United come back against Juventus and it has been described as his finest performance in a United shirt – it was the definition of what a captain should be.

Roy Keane for me was the greatest leader to have played under Ferguson and mainly for that reason he has made my team.

In his time at Old Trafford Roy Keane won 7 Premier League tiles, 4 FA-Cups, 4 Community Shields, 1 UEFA Champions League and 1 Intercontinental Cup.

CM: Bryan Robson

Bryan Robson signed for Manchester United for a British record transfer fee of £1.5million in 1981.

Bryan Robson had everything that a midfield player needs; great vision, agility, a trick or two, an eye for goal and great at winning possession. He was a terrific goal scoring box to box midfielder and was a brilliant leader.

Many people reading this will have never seen Bryan Robson play and I myself am too young to have ever seen him in the flesh but after watching many past games and clips of the ex-England captain, I can assure you that he is one of the greats.

Robson was in Sir Alex Fergusons first generation of players and was a huge part in bringing success back to Old Trafford.

In his time at Old Trafford Robson picked up 2 Premier League titles, 3 FA-CUPS, 1 League Cup, 3 Charity Shields, 1 UEFA Cup Winners Cup and 1 UEFA Super Cup.

CAM: Paul Scholes

What can I say about this man. Paul Scholes is not only in the greatest United team of all time, many would put him in the best world team of all time. With people like Zidane labeling him as the best ever central midfielder, it’s hard for me to find the words to describe him.

Scholes came through Uniteds youth system as a boy and made his debut for the senior team in 1994, scoring both goals in a 2-1 win against Port Vale. Scholes then grew into an indispensable member of the team.

Scholes was a truly unique player, he vision of the game is described by many as the best of any footballer. He always chipped in with goals and as well as being able to score from late runs into the box, he possessed an outstanding ability to score from outside of the box, with an absolute rocket of a shot. Other footballers are often quoted describing Paul Scholes as untouchable as the quality of his touch combined with his spacial awareness allowed to create room for himself in any situation.

He is one of the most gifted yet humble players to ever play the game and was the first person I wrote down when I made this list. A lot of players are blessed with a natural ability but Scholes’ ability is complemented by his professionalism. In an era where footballers started to become more like popstars, Paul Scholes was not tempted by fame or lucrative sponsorship deals, in his own words, “All I have ever wanted to do is play football”.

As I have already written on other pages of my blog, it is more effective if you hear what other people say about Paul Scholes:

“My toughest opponent? Scholes of Manchester. He is the complete midfielder. He is my favourite player”
Zinedine Zidane

“I’m star-struck when I see Paul Scholes because you never see him. On the pitch you can’t catch him. Off the pitch he disappears.”
Luis Figo

“I’m not the best, Paul Scholes is. We’re all just trying to be as good as he is”
Edgar Davids

“At La Masia his name was mentioned a lot. He’s a teacher.”
Lionel Messi

“I have no hesitation in putting a name to the embodiment of all that I think is best about football. It’s Paul Scholes. In so many ways Scholes is my favourite.”
Sir Bobby Charlton

“If he was playing with me, I would have scored so many more.”
Pele

In a spectacular 23 years in Manchester Uniteds first team Paul Scholes has picked up: 11 Premier League titles, 3 FA-Cups, 2 League Cups, 5 Community Shields, 2 UEFA Champions Leagues, 1 Intercontinental Cup and 1 UEFA Club World Cup.

LW: Ryan Giggs

Here is another player of which it is hard to describe. Ryan Giggs has been playing for the Manchester United first team for 23 years. He burst onto the scene as a rapid youngster with a trick in him and an eye for goal.

In his earlier years between 1990-the early 2000’s Giggs frightened defenders with his blistering pace and his close control of the ball. Giggs would create numerous chances in every game and would usually bag a goal or two himself.

In the later years of the Welshman’s career it became more apparent that he was more than just a young boy with pace and a trick. Ryan Giggs began to show that he had an incredible vision of the game when he was struck with hamstring injuries and his pace was compromised. Giggs began to adopt a more central midfield role in the late 2000’s and became a masterful play-maker.

Ryan Giggs has been not just been a member of the United first team for 23 years, he has been a vital part of it. Everything that Ryan Giggs does is technically superb and plays a big role in developing young players at the club.

Ryan Giggs was and still is a terrifying opponent and frightens defenders with his trickery and tactical awareness. You can still see Ryan Giggs at the age of 39 tearing players half his age apart and is still a constant threat. He has been able to mature with age and overtime has become the master of the final through ball – he is a class act and has been voted by fans as the best Manchester United player of all time.

In his time with United he has picked up a staggering 13 Premier League titles, 4 FA-Cups, 4 League Cups, 8 Community Shields, 2 UEFA Champions Leagues, 1 UEFA Super Cups, 1 Intercontinental Cup and 1 FIFA Club World Cup.

CF: Eric Cantona

Who else could be heading the attack than Eric the King.

Cantona came to Old Trafford from rivals Leeds United for a fee of £1.2 million on 26 November 1992 and was an instant hit.

The famous class of 92 were all bursting into the first team despite their talent, they needed a leader and someone on the pitch to look up to, this came in the form of Eric Cantona.

In such a young team Cantona brought in experience, confidence, flair and most notably a touch of class. He won over the Old Trafford crowd with moments of brilliance, he would regularly do things that would make you ask, how did he do that?

Eric Cantona was incredibly dangerous in-front of goal but also contributed a lot to the build up play with his movement, vision and passing range.

Cantona was a superstar at Old Trafford and was the catalyst for United dominating English football throughout the 90’s. Cantona provided United with something different, there were things he could do that others wouldn’t dream of, he played football beautifully and was always capable of the unpredictable.

Cantona’s highlight for me was his beautiful piece of dribbling followed by a delicious chip into the top corner against Sunderland at Old Trafford. His iconic celebration just summed the frenchman up, he was the king and Old Trafford was his empire.

In his time at United Eric Cantona won 4 Premier League titles, 2 FA Cups and 3 Charity Shields.

To sum up…

My team would be: Schmeichel, Neville, Ferdinand, Stam, Irwin, Ronaldo, Keane, Robson, Scholes, Giggs, Cantona

Possible subs: Van Der Sar, Bruce, Vidic, Beckham, Van Nistelrooy, Rooney, Cole, Solskjaer, Hughes, Pallister and I’m sure I’ve missed some.

Who would be in yours?

Rooney to stay at Manchester United

There is a great deal of speculation surrounding want away Manchester United striker Wayne Rooney.

Rooney who handed in a transfer request at Old Trafford in the wake of Sir Alex Fergusons retirement became unsettled at Old Trafford when he was left out of a number of games last season and was often played out of position when he did play.

He seemed to be out of favour during the 2012/2013 season with the biggest blow coming when he was left out of the starting 11 against Real Madrid at Old Trafford.

With the arrival of Robin Van Persie and Shinji Kagawa last summer, Rooney has struggled to fight for his place. For the most part of the season the England striker has found himself being played in a central midfield role and although he has looked impressive there, it is not where he wants to play.

Rooney told Four Four Two Magazine “In the years to come, that might be somewhere I could play (cenre midfield), but, right now, I’m definitely a centre-forward. I’m after more goals,”

Now Sir Alex Ferguson has retired and David Moyes has taken over the reigns, what will happen to Wayne Rooney?

One thing is for certain and that is that Rooney – where ever he plays – wants to play as a striker. I have narrowed it down to four possible clubs that he could be playing at next season: Manchester United, Arsenal, Chelsea and PSG. I have ruled out Bayern Munich because he is not what they are looking for, I don’t actually think that he is currently good enough to be an integral part of that team. I have also ruled out Monaco because although they can afford him, I think he will want Champions League football. I feel that if this situation would have occured at the end of last season, the likes of Barcelona and Real Madrid would have been interested but Rooney is plain and simply not good enough right now for either of the Spanish giants. I want to make it clear that in no way am I questioning his potential – he’s an outstanding tallent – it’s all due to Rooneys work ethic and professionalism. Rooney is often out of shape and unfit making him a risky buy for anyone.

Manchester United

Let’s start with his current team then. Rooney obviously became disgruntled last season under Sir Alex Ferguson but we are entering the reign of David Moyes now and the former Everton boss could have Rooney in his plans. Moyes’ arrival could see Rooney given a new lease of life at Old Trafford and we could see him back to his best, playing up-front with Robin Van Persie.

Arsenal

There has been mixed messages regarding this transfer. It all sparked off when Arsenal Chief Executive Ivan Gazidis said, “I’m talking about an extra £70m of additional, high-margin revenue – so of course we could do that.” when asked about signing Wayne Rooney.

I’m not too sure if Rooney would be interested in moving to the Emirates as they are no longer the force that they were. Rooney however could be the catalyst in the regeneration of the Noth London club.

Arsenal have also been strongly linked with Real Madrid striker Gonzalo Higuain this summer and if they successfully sign the Argentinian it could rule out a move for Wayne Rooney.

Former Arsenal captain Tony Adams has spoken out this week about the possibility of Rooney coming to the Emirates and he is not in favour of it. “Wayne is unquestionably a super player and I’d love to see him at the Arsenal. Technically he’s fantastic but I’m not sure about him mentally, off the pitch, and his professionalism.”, Adams told Sky Sports News.

Chelsea

Wayne Rooney has been involved in a number of spectacular matches at Stamford Bridge over the years and has scored some very important goals but could he really be playing there next year?

Returning Chelsea boss Jose Mourinho has never held back on his admiration for the England striker but does he like him enough to sign him? Mourinho recently stated that Rooney needs to be “where he is happy” but refused to comment on whether he would purchase him.

Manchester United have built up a firece rivalry with Chelsea in recent years and this rivalry will probably increase when Mourinho returns to Stamford Bridge this season. For this reason Manchester United will be very reluctant to sell to Chelsea as it could jeapordise their own title campaign.

Paris Saint Germain

Rooney could alternatively pair up with Zlatan Ibrahimovic at PSG. They certainly have the money for his transfer fee and wages and could provide him with Champions League football as well as being favourites to win the Ligue 1 title again next season.

This would provide Rooney with the opportunity to experience a different type of football and his bank balance would certainly approve as the billionaire owned club would offer Rooney a lucrative deal.

Manchester United would also be more likely to sell to PSG out of all of the clubs interested as firstly they would offer more money and secondly as a Fench club PSG will not be a domestic opponent.

To sum up…

I do not see Wayne Rooney leaving Old Trafford this summer. I believe that the issues Rooney had were with Sir Alex Ferguson and being played out of position, two things that David Moyes can instantly resolve when he officially takes over at United.

Moreover I can see Rooney flurishing under David Moyes, I feel that this is the change in his career that is needed. Rooney should be put on a strict schedule and Moyes can get the best out of him.

If Rooney does leave, he will not be sold to an English club. PSG will be his destination if he does go

Thiago Alcantara and Kevin Strootman to strengthen Manchester United midfield

All eyes are on 22-year-old Barcelona midfielder, Thiago Alcantara, after a number of impressive displays in the Under-21 European Championships in Israel. The Barcelona starlet who had been a stand out performer in the tournament, saved his best for the final as he scored a first half hat-trick to put Spain on their way to beating Italy.

It seems as though Thiago has enjoyed being the centre piece of the team and has really flurished as captain of Spain’s Under-21’s side. The son of Brazil World Cup winner Mazinho, Thiago has shown the world what he is capable of and Manchester United who have been long admirers of the Spaniard are looking to swoop this summer.

With competition at Barcelona being so intense, Thiago has found it hard to break into the first team with the likes of Xavi, Iniesta and Fabregas keeping him out. It has surfaced this summer that the initial buy out clause of  £77million in Thiago’s contract has dropped to £15million – which opens him up to be the bargain of the window.

Thiago is now tipped to be David Moyes’ first signing as Manchester United Manager as he was an admirer of the Spaniards talents for many years as Everton boss.

Speculation also grew when on the match ball – that Thiago recieved for his hat-trick in the European Under-21s Championship final – was a message from United goalkeeper David De Gea. The message read ‘Nos Vemos en Manchester’ which translates to ‘see you in Manchester’. Could this be a result of a conversation between the two? Or is it just simply a joke between team mates. Either way Thiago unlike Cesc Fabregas has not denied the rumours which could indicate that a move to Old Trafford to secure first team football is on the cards. Is this finally the replacement for Paul Scholes?

It looks like United are also poised to capture another national team captain. Kevin Strootman (23) who captained the Holland Under-21s side in the European Champions is set to move to Old Trafford this summer.

There are a number of clubs queing for the PSV Eidhoven midfielder, including Napoli as well as clubs in France and Russia but Strootmans agent, Chiel Dekker has revealed that England attracts him.

“He is focussed on England because that would suit his style,” said Dekker.

“He has the physique, the character and the fitness for it. I am certainly not afraid he could handle that level.”, he added.

Manchester Uniteds Chief Scout, Jim Lawlor watched Strootman play in Israel for the Holland Under-21s side and it is said that he liked what he saw.

Strootman has also played for the senior Holland international side, with 18 caps and one goal as well as captaining Holland once.

There are reports already coming out that this is a done deal but we will have to wait and see. It’s thought that a fee in the region of around £15million would be enough for PSV Eindhoven to let their star man go.

To sum up…

If the two players above do sign for Manchester United this summer, I see the Reds dominating English football for many years to come.

Although the two mentioned players are both central midfielders, they both play a completely different game.

Thiago is the flare player of the two, a player in the mould of the likes of Juan Mata, David Silva, Santi Carzola, etc. He will find the gap between the midfield and the defense, he will both create and score goals and will add a faster pace to the passing – something which has been missing since Paul Scholes began to age. Many fans will question this signing as United already have Shinji Kagawa in that role but Thiago is a huge and young talent and for such a low price, passing up on signing him would be a big mistake.

Kevin Strootman is a different type of midfielder. I wouldn’t call him a defensive midfielder (although his tackling ability is superb) I would say he is more of a Roy Keane type player – in his early days. He can do almost anything: tackle, pass, shoot, dribble – he is more of an all-in-one central midfielder, as was Keane.

If United managed to sign Thiago and Strootman it would be huge. They are two of the hottest prospects around and would shape the Manchester United midfield for a decade – I think this could be something similar to the Scholes and Keane combination, with Carrick still controlling the game and using his experience to coach the new generation.

Possible line-up for next season:

De Gea, Rafael, Vidic, Ferdinand, Evra, Strootman, Carrick, Thiago, Rooney, Kagawa, Van Persie

Just to add, I’m not sure when it happened or if it means anything but a video of Thiago signing a United shirt has surfaced. Here it is http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=XoUSGPcVAQ0

Tell me what you think…

Sir Alex Ferguson’s worst 11

Sir Alex Ferguson has made some amazing signings down the years but for every Solksjaer there's a Barthez.

Sir Alex Ferguson has made some amazing signings down the years but for every Solksjaer there’s a Barthez.

Since Sir Alex announced his retirement, I have seen so many people give their opinion on what his best starting 11 would be out of every player that has played for him.

I have decided to take a different approach and give you what I think would be his worst starting 11. Sir Alex Ferguson is a footballing great, he will probably go down as the greatest manager of all time but we all make mistakes and here are his biggest 11 in a 3-4-3 formation…

Massimo Taibi

Italian goalkeeper Massimo Taibi was signed by Sir Alex Ferguson for a fee of £4.4million from Venezia in 1999. ‘Great Dane’ Peter Schemichel retired after completing the treble with United in the 1998/99 season. You could argue that Manchester United only managed to regain stability between the goals when Edwin Van Der Sar was purchased in June 2005 and Taibi was just one of the keepers that failed to succeed at Old Trafford.

Taibi’s Old Trafford career did start on a possitive note as he helped United secure a 3-2 win over Liverpool at Anfield. Although he flapped at a free kick, allowing Sami Hyypiä to score, Taibi still put in a strong performance – making an array of good saves to keep Liverpool out and winning the man of the match award.

After the game against Liverpool, Massimo Taibi seemed to be winning the fight for the number one spot with Marc Bosnic and Raimond Van Der Gouw. This all changed when United entertained Southampton at Old Trafford. In a close game United were just infront with a 2-1 lead when Matt Le Tissier scuffed a shot from 25-yards out. With the ball seemingly rolling into the hands of the Italian, Taibi allowed the ball to roll straight through his hands and legs and into the goal. The game ended 3-3 with all eyes on United’s new goal keeper.

Taibi only played four matches in a United shirt, with one of them being a 5-0 defeat at Chelsea. He never really recovered from the embarrasing blunder against Southampton – a mistake that makes pretty much every football bloopers compilation.

Taibi was sent out on loan to Reggina in January 2000 and joined the Italian club on a permanent transfer for a fee of £2.5million in July 2000.

David May

The amount of silverware this guy won with Manchester United is crazy when you consider how many games he played. In nine years with United he made just 85 appearances and picked up two Premier League winners medals, two FA Cup winners medals, two Charity Shield winners medals and a Champion League winners medal.

With centre-back and captain Steve Bruce coming to the end of his career Sir Alex Ferguson needed to add to his defense. He landed David May in July 1994 for a fee of £1.2million from Blackburn.

With first choice right-back Paul Parker suffering a series of injuries, Mays first season with the reds saw him being played at right-back. The central defensive unit of Bruce and Pallister was too strong for May to break up and he very rarely got the chance to play in his prefered position.

With a string of poor performances David May was replaced at right-back by youngster Gary Neville. As we all know Neville then held onto that right-back spot for the rest of his long career.

David May did however manage to play his way back into the team in the 1996-97 season in which he made over 40 appearances (nearly half of his overall United appearances). Manchester United retained the Premier League title that year and it’s safe to say that it was Mays best season as a United player.

Injuries in the next two seasons kept May out of the team and he never played his way back in with the signings of Jaap Stam, Ronny Johnsen and Henning Berg as well as the emergence of Wes Brown standing in his way.

William Prunier

This is a player that most fans will not remember as he never actually signed for United. The French centre-back was brought in on trial because of a defensive injury crisis at Old Trafford in the Christmas of 1995.

He was thrown straight into is debut which came against QPR in a scrappy 2-1 win. Prunier then played his second game which came against Spurs as Manchester United were taught a lesson in a 4-1 defeat at White Heart Lane. Fingers were pointed at William Prunier with many saying that he was partly to blame for the loss. That was to be the Frenchman’s last game as he turned down an extention of his trial at United to complete a move to FC Copenhagen.

Pat McGibbon

Poor Pat McGibbon, that’s all I can say. He was signed by Manchester UNited for a fee of £100,000 from Irish Premier League side Portadown.

Although Sir Alex Ferguson did not sign McGibbon he did manage him when he took over. Pat McGibbon story is probably the worst of the lot. He made his debut in the league cup against York City in September 1995. McGibbon was sent off and United lost 3-0. He never played for United again. He was loaned out to Swansea City in 1996 and then Wigan Athletic in 1997 before moving there permanently.

Kleberson

Kleberson who had recently won the World Cup with Brazil was signed by Sir Alex Ferguson for a fee of £6.5million in August 2003. He was described as the driving force behind the Brazilian World Cup winning team by manager Luis Phillipe Scolari and was tipped for great things.

What is often talked about when Kleberson is mentioned is that he almost signed for Leeds United but turned their offer down to remain in Brazil with his 15-year-old fiance until she was 16 and old enough to marry.

Kleberson picked up an injury in his second game for United and after then made just 20 appearances in 2 years for the reds. For a young player that was being tipped to reach the top, Kleberson was a very disappointing signing.

Kleberson now plays for American club Philadelphia Union.

Eric Djemba-Djemba

With Kleberson being seen as a replacement for Veron, Eric Djemba Djemba was brought in to replace United legend Roy Keane. It is fair to say that both players were a huge flop.

Cameroonian midfielder Djemba Djemba was purchased from French side Nantes for £6.5 million in the summer of 2003. This signing baffled United fans and as no one had really heard of him before and when they finally saw him play, were baffled further.

There was only one attribute that Djemba Djemba shared with Roy Keane – the willingness to hurt people. The only real difference is that Keane intended to inflict pain on the oposition whereas Djemba Djemba just simply couldn’t time his challenges.

After a disappointing one and a half season spell at Old Trafford -making 20 appearances-  Djemba Djemba was sold in January 2005 to Aston Villa for a fee of £1.5million.

You can now find Djemba Djemba playing forIsraeli side Bnei Sakhni.

Luke Chadwick

Above you can see heart throb Luke Chadwick. Coming into the senior squad through the youth team, Chadwick was given a platform to perform on by Ferguson but all the platform did was highlight the fact that he wasn’t good enough.

He made 25 appearances for the Red Devils from 1999-2004 inbetween loan spell at Royal Antwerp, Reading and Burnley before joining West Ham on a free transfer in 2004.

Chadwicks blistering pace out wide was tipped to push David Beckham into a central midfield role, this was not the case as Chadwick proved not to be good enough for United.

He now plays in League One for Milton Keynes Dons.

Juan Sebastián Verón

Manchester United signed Argentinian midfielder Juan Sebastián Verón for £28million in 2001 – which was a British transfer record at the time.

Veron was key to Lazio winning a domestic treble before he left and was instrumental in almost every game. He was a very highly rated playerand although he came with a price tag it looked like it would be worth it as he scored and created goals for fun in Italy.

Although he seemed to excell in Europe for Manchester United, Veron did not prove his worth in the Premier League with most people suggesting that he struggled to adapt to the pace of the Premier League.

The tempo that Keane and Scholes liked to play at did not suit the layed back, Argentinian Play-maker. The reason for my inclusion of Veron in this list is slightly different to the rest, Veron is there in relation to the transfer fee. He was bought as someone that would be the main man, a superstar but he just blended into the background and £28million is a lot of money for someone that doesn’t stand out.

Veron was sold to Chelsea for £15million in 2003.

Bebe

Just five weeks after he signed for Vitória de Guimarães, Manchester United purchased Bebe from the Portuguese club for a fee of around £7.4 million in August 2010.
Not many people had heard of Bebe before United announced his signature but rumour has it that former Manchester United Assistant Manager Carlos Queiroz suggested that Sir Alex Ferguson sign him. A practical joke on an old friend perhaps?
With the amount of money being paid for Bebe and also with him being an unheard of talent (much like Javier Hernandez, who was signed in the same window) his début was widely anticipated.
He came on for Park Ji-Sung ion the second half of a 5-2 win over Scunthorpe United in the League Cup. He then came on late against Sunderland and couldn’t prevent the Reds from only managing to draw 0-0, on 2nd October 2010 Bebe was the selected in the starting 11 for the League Cup clash with Wolverhampton Wonderer’s on 26 October 2010. Bebe scored his first United goal and United scored a 3-2 win. Bebe also went on to score on his Champions League début – coming against Bursaspor.
Now I know what you’re thinking, from reading what I’ve written above, you are wondering why I’ve put him in Fergies Worst 11. It’s simple really, Bebe was given more chances to play than most would because his transfer fee was so high. On paper the start to his United career doesn’t appear to be that bad but I watched those games and let me assure you from his first kick of a ball in a United shirt I could tell he wasn’t good enough. He stood out for all of the wrong reasons, he was clumsy, out of position and just looked out of place in the games he played.
Yes he scored on his Champions League début but with the likes of Carrick and Scholes in the centre of the park, most would.
Bebe has up until now made 7 appearances for United in 3 years. He still remains a United player but has recently been loaned out to Beşiktaş and Rio Ave.
This guy is in my team mainly because of the size of his transfer fee and because of just how obvious it is that he isn’t good enough.
David Bellion
Here he is everyone: Manchester Uniteds answer to Thierry Henry at least that’s what they told us.
David Bellion made a bit of a name for himself at Sunderland and when he ran out his contract there, he signed for United on a free transfer. Sunderland however took United to court over the matter claiming ‘Tapping Up’ which resulted in United paying Sunderland £2million in compensation.
It is safe to say that the French striker was not a success at Old Trafford, scoring just 4 goals in 3 years at the club. After an unsuccessful 3 seasons, Bellion was loaned out to West Ham where he failed to score in the 8 games he played in. He was then loaned out to French side Nice in 2006 before securing a permanent move there.
After a spell at Bordeaux between 2007-2010, Bellion returned to Nice where he finds it much easier to score.
Dong Fangzhuo
This is another player that most won’t recognise due to the simple fact that he made just one appearance for Manchester United.
United splashed out £500,000 for the Chinese striker in 2004 which could have potentially risen to £3.5million in appearances fees, this however would not be a problem…because he wasn’t allowed to play.
Dong Fangzhuo was rejected a work permit to play professional football in England and was subsequently loaned out to Belgian side Royal Antwerp from 2004-2006 – where he impressively scored 34 goals in 71 games.
In December 2006 – nearly 3 years after originally signing for United Dong Fangzhuo was finally granted a work permit after playing enough times for the Chinese national team.
Dong made his competitive début against Chelsea at Stamford Bridge on 9th May 2007. He then came on as a substitute for Wayne Rooney  against Roma in the Champions League and played a full 90 minutes in the League-Cup defeat to Coventry City.
Dong’s contract was terminated before the 2007/08 season and he moved back to China to play for Dalian Shide where he was hugely disappointing and was relegated to the reserves.
You can now find him not scoring for Chinese second tier club, Hunan Billows.
To sum up…
Massimo Taibi, David May, William Prunier, Pat McGibbon, Kleberson, Eric Djemba-Djemba, Luke Chadwick, Juan Sebastian Veron, Bebe, David Bellion, Dong Fangzhuo
and here are some more for the bench:
Jordi Cruyff, Liam Miller, Marc Bosnic, Fabien Barthez, Gabriel Obertan, Ralph Milne
Are there any more you can think of?

Footballs greatest praise Paul Scholes

Paul Scholes striking one of his most famous goals- against Barcelona. Which sent United into the Champions League final in 2008

After Paul Scholes announced his retirement at the end of the 2012/2013 season, football lost an icon. Instead of me rambling on about how great of a player he is, I thought you’d want to hear the views of the people that really matter. Here a quotes from the biggest names that have been involved in our beautiful game:

I thought I’d start with my favourite of the lot:

Zinedine Zidane:

“You rarely come across the complete footballer, but Scholes is as close to it as you can get, he is my favourite player.”

“One of my regrets is that the opportunity to play alongside him never presented itself during my career.”

“My toughest opponent? Scholes of Manchester. He is the complete midfielder.”

“He’s almost untouchable in what he does. I never tire of watching him play.”

Zidane’s admiration of Scholes is heart-warmingly sincere. I get goosebumps every time I read these quotes.

Xavi:

“In the last 15 to 20 years the best central midfielder that I have seen – the most complete – is Scholes. I have spoken with Xabi Alonso about this many times. Scholes is a spectacular player who has everything. He can play the final pass, he can score, he is strong, he never gets knocked off the ball and he doesn’t give possession away. If he had been Spanish then maybe he would have been valued more.”

Luis Figo:

“I’m star-struck when I see Paul Scholes because you never see him. On the pitch you can’t catch him. Off the pitch he disappears.”

Edgar Davids:

“I’m not the best, Paul Scholes is.”

“Every one of us (midfielders) is just trying to become as good as him. Everyone can learn from Paul Scholes.”

Pele:

“If he was playing with me, I would have scored so many more.”

Patrick Viera:

“The player in the Premiership I admire most? Easy – Scholes.”

Roy Keane:

“An amazingly gifted player who remained an unaffected human being.”

Laurent Blanc:

“I tell anyone who asks me – Scholes is the best English player.”

Xabi Alonso:

“I admire him a huge amount. To me, he is a role model.”

Wayne Rooney:

“The best player I’ve played with or against.”

José Mourinho:

“One of the best in the world. Manchester United are lucky to have him.”

Thierry Henry:

“I can’t understand why Scholes has never won the player of the year award. He should have won it long ago. Maybe it’s because he doesn’t seek the limelight like some of the other ‘stars’.”

“He is my Favourite player.”

“United always had many amazing players, but whenever we faced them we were always, always, always scared of what Paul Scholes could do. “Ask anyone from that old Arsenal team, they will tell you the same.”

Diego Maradona:

“His technique is unique.”

Ronaldinho:

“I want to pass like him. Who taught him how to do that?”

Brian Kidd:

“Paul Scholes had the best football brain I’d ever seen in a kid. Let’s face it. Paul Scholes is in a class of his own.”

Marcello Lippi

“Paul Scholes would have been one of my first choices for putting together a great team.”
Pep Guardiola:

“Out of everyone at Manchester United, I would pick out Scholes, he is the best midfielder of his generation. I would had loved to play alongside him.”

Cesc Fabregas:

“He is the one whose level I aspire to. He is the best player in the Premier League.”

Lionel Messi:

“At La Masia his name was mentioned a lot. He’s a teacher.”

“He’s an inspiration.”

Gerard Pique:

“One of the best players I’ve ever seen in my life.”

Dimitar Berbatov:

“Nobody else can play the way Paul Scholes does.”

Cristiano Ronaldo:

“When we were in training, I used to do a lot of tricks which hardly any players at the club could do. Once I was showing my skills to Scholes. After I finished, Scholes took the ball and pointed to a tree which was about 50m from where we were standing. He said, I’m going to hit it in one shot. He kicked and hit the tree. He asked me to do the same; I kicked about 10 times, but still couldn’t hit it, with that accuracy. He smiled and left.”

Gary Neville:

“I wouldn’t swap Paul Scholes for anybody. He is quite simply the most complete footballer I have ever played with. He is the best.”

Rio Ferdinand:

“Best player? For me, it’s Paul Scholes. He’ll do ridiculous things in training like say, “You see that tree over there?” – it’ll be 40 yards away – “I’m going to hit it”. And he’ll do it. Everyone at the club considers him the best.”

George Best:

“He is simply the best.”

David Beckham:

“Even when I’m playing with Real Madrid, the players always say to me ‘what’s he like?'”

Ryan Giggs:

“I have played with some great players in my time at United but I would have to put Paul Scholes down as the best.”

Sir Bobby Charlton:

“Many great players have worn the shirt of Manchester United. Players I worshipped, then lost with my youth in Munich. Players like Denis Law and George Best who I enjoyed so much as team-mates and now, finally, players I have watched closely in the Alex Ferguson era. And in so many ways Scholes is my favourite.”

“Paul Scholes is my favourite player. He epitomises the spirit of Manchester United and everything that is good about football.”

Sir Alex Ferguson:

“Without question, I think Paul Scholes is the best player in England. He’s got the best skills, the best brain. No one can match him.”

“He has an awareness of what’s happening around him on the edge of the box which is better than most players. As a kid he always had a knack of arriving in the penalty area just at the right time, but he’s proving just as effective from outside the box because he’s using his experience in the right way. It doesn’t matter who I am thinking about bringing into my midfield, Paul Scholes will be included, as he would in any side in the world.”

Sir Alex Ferguson gave evidence in court on behalf of one of his former trainees and listened to the prosecution barrister’s list of United’s top players.

“You’ve missed Paul Scholes – and he’s my best player,” Ferguson chided her.

Paul Scholes:

“I am not a man of many words, but I can honestly say playing football is all I have ever wanted to do.”

Tell me your views on Scholes – best English player ever? Best player ever?

Ribery and Baines do well for themselves in The Bloomberg Sports list

Franck-Ribery-Bayern-Munich

This week saw the release of the first “BSports Power Football 50”- a list of the top 50 footballers in Europes top leagues. The first Bloomberg Sports list was released on 12th June 2013 and claims to use scientifically based analysis to evaluate players on skills relevant to their position.

Bill Squadron, president of Bloomberg Sports, told Sky Sports: “We continue to look at new ways to use analytics that will be interesting to fans, and are pleased today to unveil what we believe will be a game-changer in the way professional football is looked at in the future.”

Now I for one am a fan of this, it is nice for us to see who the best players in European culb football are. As I first heard of production of this list I was all for it… and then I saw the list.

Ladies and gentlemen, I give you the BSports Power Football 50:

Top 50 European playersTop 50 European players

First of all, can someone please tell me why Giorgio Chiellini, Marek Hamsik, Arturo Vidal, Marouane Fellaini and Maxime Gonalons are all deemed to have more ‘skill relevant to their position’ than Luis Suarez? This is just one of many issues I have with the list.

I don’t think anyone could argue with the top two, although you could debate all day as to who should be number 1. Ronaldo or Messi? This is a question that I am not getting into- two of the best footballers to ever play the game. It’s like asking someone if they’re a Beatles or Rolling Stones fan – everyone will have their own opinion on this one.

The first problem I have with this list is with number 3. Now I’m not saying that Ribery isn’t an outstanding footballer and that he shouldn’t feature in a high position on the list, I just feel that there are other players more deserving of a place in the top 3. With Juan Mata at number 24 and Xavi at 25, I just don’t see how the inconsistent Frenchman has made number 3.

I know he’s a talented footballer but what on earth is Andrea Pirlo doing at number 4. I wouldn’t have even put him there in his prime. Marco Reus is one that’s up for debate really, I like him as a player, he always seems to make something happen but I also feel that he is ranked too high.

Coming in at number 9 is Welsh maestro Gareth Bale. I personally feel that it should have been Bale completing the top 3 instead of Ribery. He has developed into a complete footballer this season and has worried every defence he has come up against.

Now Santi Carzola is a talented attacking midfielder and usually plays behind the striker. He is a brilliant footballer and has really shone in his debut season in the Premier League. I just feel that there are alot of other players in this mould that are probably a level up from Carzola – who is 10th in the list. Look no further than Juan Mata who remarkably features 14 places lower than Carzola, coming in at 24th.

Leighton Baines is the highest ranked of just two Englishmen that made the list. The Everton full-back impressively came in at 16, which would make him the best full-back in European club football? Now the list evaluates players on skills relevant to their position but I would say Baines’ main attributes would be his ability in striking dead balls, getting forward down the flank and crossing – when were these skills relevant to being a full-back? I gauruntee that his defensive abilities did not contribute to his high position. If he was judged on his defending (as a defender should be) there is no way he would have finished where he did in the list. With just Juventus’ Giorgio Chiellini being the only defender ahead of him, the list implies that Leighton Baines is the second best defender in European club football – some things just shouldn’t be decided by technology.

Let me know what you think of the list.

England Under-21s, what could have been

After losing every game of the group stage of the European Under-21 Championship- with the final hammer blow coming last night, with a 1-0 defeat to hosts Israel.

England managed to score just one goal over the three games in Israel- coming from the penalty spot, with Craig Dawson tucking it away.

With no goals being scored from open play and with not a single point to their name, questions are beginning to be asked about just what went wrong.

pearce

England Under-21s Manager Stuart Pearce has not held back and has put the blame on his players. He told Sky Sports “The bottom line is you expect your players to do the basics, hold the ball up, work back into position, if you’ve asked them to defend on the halfway line in respect to the opposition corner then you don’t expect to stand in your technical area and tell them eight or nine times every time there’s a corner; its basic football knowledge.”

I have to agree with Stuart Pearce. Compared to how domminant, organised and exciting the Under-21s were in the qualifying rounds- at the tournament they were a shadow of the team that went nine games unbeaten before the European Championship.

Unfortunately it seems as though the Under-21s have the same thing that the seniour squad suffer from – a phobia of performing when it matters. You could say that the side have been their own downfall – after going nine games unbeaten in impressive style- the under-21s attracted a lot of media attention.

The English public were now aware that they had a strong under-21s side to support, which only piled pressure onto the youngsters. I feel the problem was not that England didn’t try hard enough- it’s that they tried too hard. This is the same problem that the senior squad faces.

Just like Stuart Pearce, I’m not going to defend the players or make excuses for them because ultimately they were poor and under-performed. I do feel however that the squad could have been much stronger had England taken some of their more experienced players.

The likes of Jack Wilshere, Jack Rodwell, Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain, Danny Wellbeck, keiran Gibbs, Phil Jones, Chris Smalling were all eligable to play at the tournament but none did. I can’t say that an under-21s team with these players in it would have won the European Championship but I certainly don’t think they would have crashed out of their group with three straight defeats. With Spain selecting players such as Thiago Allacantra, David De Gea, Isco, Tello and Morata – did England really field their best possible side?

82104644_Jack_232785c England-under-21s-25881welbs

Now here is the team that suffered a 1-0 defeat to Israel last night:

Steele, Clyne, Wisdom, Lees, Rose, Ince, Shelvey, Zaha, Mceachran, Chalobah, Wickham

And here is what that team could have looked like:

Buttland, Jones, Smalling, Caulker, Gibbs, Cleverly, Wilshere, Rodwell, Oxlade-Chamberlain, Wellbeck, Sturridge – also Raheem Sterling

Just for the record I would like to point out that the likes of Wilfred Zaha, Tom Ince, Shelvey, Wisdom, Henderson are all brilliant players and would be in the squad if I picked it, I am just pointing out alternatives.

Who will be leaving Old Trafford this summer?

Yesterday I talked about possible transfers into Old Trafford and today I will discuss who could be leaving. Although Manchester United comfortably secured their twentieth English league title this year – many are still pointing out players that are just not cutting it. There could also be one or two players that want just simply want to leave this summer.

Just like yesterday I will give a likeliness rating out of 10 – with 1 being incredibly unlikely and 10 being almost certain to happen.

Wayne Rooney: 4/10

Image

Where else could I start?

Speculation about the future of Wayne Rooney has been circulating since the signing of Robin Van Persie. In the opening stages of the season Rooney was left out of a number of games, with former United boss Sir Alex Ferguson stating, “Wayne’s a bit behind other players in terms of fitness. He needs a few games” .

This only sparked questions about the 27-year-old’s future at the club which continued throughout the season with Rooney appearing to be second choice behind Van Persie. After Christmas it appeared as though Rooney had played himself back into the team – mainly as a midfielder.

Then came the biggest shock of the season. On 5th March 2013- the most anticipated game of the season between Manchester United and Real Madrid took place. The starting 11 was announced and Rooney’s name did not appear on it. This decision shocked the world and could have been an indication that Rooney was no longer an important part of the United set-up. The decision prompted United legend Roy Keane to say: “Maybe the writing is on the wall for him”.

Rooney came back from not starting that game and chipped in with a number of impressive performances towards the end of the season. A highlight being his beautifully weighted pass for Robin Van Persie against Aston Villa- with Van Persie’s spectacular volley clinching United’s 20th league title.

However in the wake of the announcement of Sir Alex Fergusons retirement – United fans were dealt a second blow when it surfaced that for a second time, Rooney had handed in a transfer request.

Now it’s time for my verdict on what I think will happen. What needs to be taken into consideration is that Rooney has done this before and didn’t leave. The difference now is that he is no longer the hero of Old Trafford. With Robin Van Persie emerging as the talisman at United this season, Rooney could be allowed to leave for the right price. In my opinion United could buy someone a lot more reliable, professional, determined and talented than Rooney for the money he could be sold for. Look no further than Polish gem – Robert Lewandowski.

Although Rooney has handed in a transfer request and appears to want away from Old Trafford, I do NOT see this happening. There are a few factors that I have taken into consideration. Firstly Rooney is not playing at the level he once was and will no longer attract the attention of the two Spanish giants (Real Madrid and Barcelona). I can not see him moving to Italy – no offence to any Italians or lovers of the Serie A but it would be a step down and I do not think it will interest Mr Rooney. I also can’t see Dortmund or Bayern being interested in the out of form and out of shape 27-year-old either and Moyes will not sell him to an English club. This only leaves two possible suitors- Paris Saint Germain and Monaco. These two French clubs have the cash but do they have enough quality to attract Rooney?

If it happens, it will be PSG that capture the want away striker but my money is on him staying with Moyes getting the best from him. Get him on a strict routine and unleash the player that we all know is in there.

I think the likelihood of him leaving is 4/10.

Luis Nani: 9/10

Image

As soon as his name is mentioned one image comes to mind and that is the one of him receiving at red card against Real Madrid in March.

That night somewhat epitomised the 26-year-old’s career at Old Trafford – superb, unpredictable and disappointing. In all fairness he was having a terrific game and United were sure to qualify after his crossed ball hit Sergio Ramos and trickled over the line. Only for Nani to be sent off for a high foot on Arbeloa in the second half- resulting in United conceding twice in the space of four minutes.

Despite notable moments of brilliance throughout his six years at Old Trafford Nani has been frustratingly unpredictable. Everyone knows that there is a highly talented footballer in  Nani but it seems that you very rarely get the chance to meet him.

He has recently spoken about his future “I have not yet decided where I am going or if I am going”, Nani told RTP

The only thing that could keep Nani at Old Trafford next season would be if David Moyes saw potential in him and decides to work closely on improving his consistency.

I personally feel that United have given him as many chances as he needs to prove himself and it is time to move on.

Galatasaray Chairman, Unal Aysal claims that the Turkish side have had a £6million bid for the Portuguese winger rejected as United were holding out for more money. I think Monaco will come in and offer Manchester United the amount that they want and Nani will depart this summer – around £10million

The likelihood of Nani leaving: 9/10.

Anderson: 9/10

Image

As a Manchester United fan myself, I get incredibly frustrated whenever this guys name is mentioned. He had a terrific first season, making a good contribution to United winning both the Premier League and the Champions League. Since then it is almost as if the 24-year-old has deteriorated just a little bit more every season.

I think it would be safe to say that the Old Trafford crowd has a soft spot for Anderson as his charisma and personality is there for everyone to see. Who could forget the priceless footage of him marching with soldiers at Old Trafford after winning the Premiership back in 2009.

His contribution to the team however has not been enough from 2009 onwards. There was a lot of faith shown in Anderson at Old Trafford and he was tipped to become a great. The Brazilian who made just 12 Barclays Premier League appearances in the 2012/2013 season certainly looks out of favour and will also probably move on this summer.

A return to his former club Porto is said to be on the cards and he has not ruled it out “I can say that Porto are the only club where I could think of going if I returned to Portugal.”, he told a Portuguese newspaper.

Anderson arrived at Old Trafford in the same transfer window as Nani and I think they’ll be leaving in the same window- this one.

Anderson who was bought by United for £25.7 million in 2007 will return to Porto this summer for a fee of around £7 million.

The likelihood of Anderson leaving: 9/10

Patrice Evra: 5/10

Image

Speculation began to surround Patrice Evra’s future at Manchester United last summer when he had a disappointing end to the 2011/2012 campaign with a number of poor performances. Questions continued to be asked about the 32-year-old Frenchman in the early stages of the 2012/2013 season when his poor performances continued.

With bad performances in losses to Spurs and Norwich – there was talk of Evra leaving United.

Then the emergence of Dutch full-back Alexander Büttner to the starting 11 changed everything for Evra. A couple of impressive displays from the energetic 24-year-old seemed to boost Evra’s performances, with the fear of losing his place in the team driving him.

Although Büttner continued to impress in his début season, Evra managed to keep his place and ended the season strong,

Since the 2012/2013 ended, rumours linking Evra with former club Monaco have surfaced in the press and have not gone away. The newly promoted French side – backed by the billions of Russian owner Dmitry Rybolovlev – are said to be tabling an offer of  for the French international.

My thoughts are that although this would be a great bit of business for United – I just can’t see it happening. To get £10million for Evra at this stage of his career would be very hard for United to turn down. Patrice Evra however is more than just a full-back at Old Trafford, he is a leader and a winner who knows how to win games.

I don’t think David Moyes will be keen to lose one of his most experienced and successful players but the money might be too good to resist.

I’m going with my gut on this one, I just don’t think he’ll leave. I’ll give it a 5/10 chance of happening strictly because of the amount of money we might get for him.

Antonio Valencia: 6/10

Image

You’ve got to feel slightly sorry for this fella – despite being set back due to an horrific injury suffered against Rangers in the Champions League in 2010 – he’s been terrific.

He was outstanding in the 2011/2012 season winning both fans’ and players’ player of the year as well as scooping the goal of the season award for his strike against Blackburn in April 2012.

This season however he has failed to recapture the form he showed last year, he has struggled to cement a place in the starting 11 and when he has been given an opportunity he often squandered it. After suffering a couple of injuries throughout the season, the 27-year-old Ecuadorian has struggled to get back to his stride and has consequently disappointed the Old Trafford crowd this year.

With the arrival of the exciting Wilfred Zaha this season, Valencia could find himself being sold to make way for the new blood.

My opinion on this is that Valencia has not been provided with the kind of chances that Nani and Anderson have. He’s had four seasons as a red: A fantastic first season, he missed the second with that horrific injury to his ankle, he then came back the following season to win three awards, then we have the disappointment of last season.

I believe he should be given next season to recapture his form. He is a great squad player and can also be played at right back. I think he will come good again next season if Moyes keeps him. He certainly doesn’t want to leave as he told Radio La Deportiva, “This is my home, I would like to stay here for a lot longer and retire here before going back to Ecuador.”

Although I believe he should stay, Moyes could be looking to reshuffle, starting with the under performers of last season.

I’m going to give this a 6/10 chance of happening.

To sum up…

I see Nani going to Monaco for around £10million and Anderson to Porto for about £7million.

I think Rooney will stay as Moyes will feature him in his plans as too will Evra as he is provides the team with experience. Valencia is a bit more hit and miss but I believe he will be kept on at United and will recapture his form in the 2013/2014 season.

Who will Moyes snap up this summer?

Well, well, well. With the summer transfer window creeping open just a little bit more everyday, Manchester United are once again being linked with almost every player under the sun. David Moyes is about to enter his first transfer window with the reds and many are suggesting that the former Everton boss will spend big as a signal of intent to the rest of the league. I have decided to take a look at a number of players the English champions are looking at and just how likely each move is:

Cristiano Ronaldo: 5/10

Image

Above you can see Real Madrid maestro Ronaldo showing respect for former club -Manchester United after his goal knocked them out of the Champions League back in March.

Now this is by no means a new rumour, the 28 year-old Portuguese superstar has been linked with a move back to United since he left in 2009. The rumours this time however seem to have a bit more substance than in the past. Starting at the beginning of last season when Ronaldo claimed he was ‘sad’. Apparently Ronaldo has also sold his villa in Spain which has got people talking.

I do not have to discuss if this transfer is good for the club or if the fans want it – it’s Ronaldo, need I say more?

All that has to be considered is if Real will sell him, if United can afford him and if Ronaldo actually wants to come.

I personally feel that Real Madrid’s public interest in Gareth Bale is an indication that they are worried that they could potentially lose Ronaldo this summer. I think Madrid will sell for a price around the £65million- which would be an English transfer record.

I think the fact that this is David Moyes’ first transfer window at United will help to secure Ronaldo’s signature. Moyes will spend big and spend big on a fan favourite to first show his intentions but to also win over the Old Trafford crowd. With dead weight such as Nani, Anderson and Young possibly going – there will be extra funds made available to capture a United hero.

Does Ronaldo want to return? It now seems to only be money keeping Ronaldo in Madrid but would he accept less money to rejoin United? With The Sun claiming “a basic salary in excess of £300,000 a week to make him the highest-paid player in English football” will be tabled.

In my opinion if Ronaldo moves back to United, it will be huge for the club. He is the type of player that will turn United into a Champions League winning side once again. Everything he does is technically perfect and he will influence every player around him. He knows and loves the club as much as anyone- PERFECT signing.

I am split with this one. My head tells me NO CHANCE and that the kind of money being spoken about is well out of United’s depth. My heart on the other hand is allowing me to believe that this move is possible.  I still can not be 100% certain either way and taking everything into consideration I am giving this transfer a likelihood of 5/10.

Fabregas: 8/10

Image

Now this one seems to have come from nowhere but like the Ronaldo story has a great deal of substance behind it.

Cesc Fabregas has not quite had the dream return to his childhood club that he wished. With the array of talent in the Barcelona midfield- the former Gunners captain has struggled to win the battle for a starting place, losing out to maestro’s Xavi and Iniesta.

Any player would struggle to beat the brilliance of Xavi and Iniesta who have been the back bone of what has often been labelled as ‘the best club side ever’. However 26 year-old Fabregas is far too big of a talent to be sat watching.

The English champions have emerged as favourites to secure the services of the Spaniard – if he is to leave. United have been left with a huge hole in the centre of midfield with the retirement of Manchester legend, Paul Scholes.

Comments from former United defender Dennis Irwin have really boosted interest in story. Irwin, who was one of the first to declare United’s interest in Robin Van Persie has been very vocal on the matter. “Cesc Fabregas has zoomed up Manchester United’s transfer target list to the top position and the champions are going to move heaven and earth to get him,” Irwin told the Sunday World.

There are a couple of reasons why the move may not go through. The first one being Barcelona’s reluctance to let Fabregas go. There will be a point where Xavi ages and is unable to keep up with the tempo that Barca play at. The perfect replacement at this point will be Fabregas who knows the club as well as anyone does and his ability is not up for question. The Catalan giants will be aware of this and how losing Cesc for a second time could cost them dearly.

The second is that Fabregas himself may have a loyalty to Arsenal. A move to Old Trafford may not interest him as United were his fierce rivals during his eight years at Arsenal.

Thirdly- does Cesc actually want to leave the Nou Camp? They are the team he supported and played for as a boy and he returned to compete there with the best players in the world. Fabregas is an ambitious and competitive individual and it is likely that he wants to fight for his place.

A fee in the region of £40 million is said to be the amount that United will offer. This is certainly a fee that the Red Devils can afford.

This would be a terrific signing for the champions. Fabregas would control that midfield, chip in with goals, help out in defence and is a proven leader. With Scholes gone it would take someone of Cesc’s ability to step-up and control the midfield. He has already shown us he is a good fit for the Premier League and his return would be greatly anticipated.

At first I dismissed this potential transfer, I thought it was just another fabricated piece of nonsense. The words of Dennis Irwin however have changed my view on this. Someone in the position of Irwin would not just simply say something like this if there was no truth behind it – claiming that United will “move heaven and earth” to get him.

With what Irwin has said and taking into consideration just how much United need a player like this, I’m going the say that this has an 8/10 chance of happening.

Robert Lewandowski: 4/10 if Rooney stays. 9/10 if Rooney leaves

Image

Will he? Won’t he? The question that has been on the lips of the majority of Bayern Munich fans. The answer in short: No he won’t. Borussia Dortmund have confirmed that their remaining prized asset will not be following Mario Goetze to Munich.

“Lewandowski will definitely not go to Bayern in 2013,” Dortmund president Hans-Joachin Watzke told German sports paper Bild.

This has now turned all attention to Manchester – with United appearing as front runners to sign the 24-year-old Polish international.

With 36 goals in 49 appearances for Dortmund this season- Lewandowski is one of the hottest prospects in Europe.

It seems very clear that the Dortmund striker wants to leave as he has already stated that he wishes to move to his ‘dream club’ this summer.

Now, do United need him? If Rooney is to leave then definitely but I for one believe that Rooney is staying. This means one of two things: 1) Rooney will play as a central midfielder. 2) We will not buy Lewandowski.

This guy is a goal machine and would shine in any club in the world. The links between Manchester United and the Polish striker have been strong for a number of months and there’s no smoke without fire. With the amount of strikers at Old Trafford piling up- one of them would have to leave to make way for Lewandowski.

With the amount of strikers at Old Trafford at the moment, I just don’t see this one happening so I’ll give it a 4/10 chance of happening. If Rooney does leave however I reckon it’s certain to happen- 9/10

Kevin Strootman: 9/10

Image

For those of you who are not aware of the 23-year-old, you will be come September when he will burst into the Manchester United starting 11.

United have been linked with the Holland international all year and he seems to be a perfect fit. Playing in more of a defensive midfield role, Strootman will provide stability in the midfield. Strootman will battle for possession and distribute from a deep position in the centre of the park- giving Carrick more freedom to get forward.

Strootman who has 18 full international appearances at senior level is currently in Israel, captaining the Holland under 21 side in the European Under-21Football Championship.

Kevin Strootman has declined to comment on the speculation surrounding him but a deal is said to be close. A fee in the region of around £17.5million is said to be the amount that will bring another Dutch player to Old Trafford.

With Manchester United chief scout Jim Lawlor in attendance for Holland U21’s 5-1 demolition of Russia, United are expected to complete the deal after the tournament.

This would be a perfect signing for Manchester United- someone to battle and demand in the midfield- a gap that has been present since Roy Keane departed. This guy has everything, on top of his tackling/ball winning he scores goals, makes assists and is a natural leader.

This will be the signing of the season and should happen soon but it’s not done yet and anything can happen- 9/10.

Leighton Baines: 3/10

Image

I just do not see this on happening at all. There are obviously a number of factors in favour of United signing him but I think there are more reasons not to.

This season Leighton Baines has established himself as England’s best left back. This was no walk in the as Ashley Cole was the man he had to beat- arguably one of the most consistent players of the last decade and a world-class full back at his best. With Cole ageing Baine’s has shown the Premier League that the left-back spot is his.

But is he right for United? In a word, yes. I don’t believe he will sign for the champions though. As great of a player Leighton Baines is, at the age of 28, I think United may have left this one too late.

A fantastic player but Manchester United won’t get enough years out of him to make this a sensible signing. A likelihood rating of 3/10.

Marouane Fellaini: 2/10

Image

Again, I really doubt this transfer. It seems as though the central midfield roles are a priority at Old Trafford this summer but with the arrival of Kevin Strootman becoming more likely by the day, I think Fellaini will be over looked this summer.

Arsenal are said to be leading the chase with a number of other clubs for the 25-year-old. I think he’ll end up at Arsenal for a fee of around £24million- it’s pricey but he’s exactly what they need to hold that midfield and chip in with a few goals. Arsenal: 8/10 chance. United 2/10 chance.

To sum up…

I now think that Strootman will definitely sign and after that I believe Fabregas should be our main target with Ronaldo being out of our price range. Also if Rooney is sold- Lewandowski will definitely sign.

A realistic starting 11 next season:

De Gea,  Rafael, Jones, Vidic, Evra, Strootman, Fabregas, Carrick, Rooney, Kagawa, Van Persie

A dream starting 11 for next season:

De Gea,  Rafael, Jones,Vidic, Evra, Strootman, Fabregas, Carrick, Ronaldo, Van Persie, Lewandowski
